To prepare for Class 7: Memes, Remix and Collaborative Visuailty (17 March), please read this book:
Shifman, Limor. Memes in Digital Culture. Cambridge MA: MIT Press, 2014. (I would recommend buying this in print, but the University Library also has it digitally: http://site.ebrary.com/lib/bergen/detail.action?docID=10776345 Links to an external site..
Writing journal prompts:
- Do your friends share memes? What kinds of memes, typically, do you come across? Do they fit with Shifman's descriptions and categorizations of memes?
- It usually takes a year or two for a book to be published after the manuscript is finished. Do you think memes have changed since Shifman wrote her book?
- Have you ever made memes? Why? Did you achieve your goal (e.g. have fun, make someone laugh, see it go viral, change someone's mind or perhaps something completely different?)
