It's important to learn how to read, so in preparation for the class on the New Aesthetic on 25 Feb, please write a critique of either Virilio's chapter on "The Vision Machine", or of Paul and Levy's chapter on "Geneologies of the New Aesthetic". See the reading list for details of where to find these. I recommend you read Bruce Sterling's easy-to-read essay on the New Aesthetic (Links to an external site.) before you read the other material for this class. You should also take a look at the Tumblr full of images (Links to an external site.) that James Bridle used to visually define the genre. But I don't want a critique of these, I want you to critique one of the more difficult pieces of reading.
By "critique" I do not mean "summarise the article". This is what I want you to do:
- State what you think the main point of the chapter is.
- State something you find problematic, or that you disagree with. Explain why you find this to be problematic.
- Write a conclusion - is there still something of value in this chapter? What? Why is it valuable?
You should write at least 2-3 paragraphs. You should be spending at least 2 hours thoroughly reading the chapter you decide to critique, and expect to spend at least 1-2 hours writing the critique. I also expect you to read the other assigned material for this class.
If you have trouble doing this for whatever reason, please get in touch with me either by email (use the inbox here at Mitt UiB) or drop by my office (room 345 in the HF building, near our seminar room.)
