Discussions

You may find Discussions in the course menu, and you will always find Discussions in a group menu.

What you can do in Discussions at a course level, depends on the choices made by the administration or teachers for the course in question. Sometimes you can create discussions, and other times you can participate in discussions created by the teachers. Sometimes you have to make your own posts to see the other students' posts.

Important: Always select Reply directly after the top entry to create 'regular' posts.  When it comes to threaded discussions, if you select Reply in one of the reply boxes, your post will be associated with that reply. This also applies if you use Reply in the last part of the discussion.

Start a discussion

  • When you see the +Discussion button above the discussion list, you are able to start a discussion.
  • When you see the Edit button above your entry, you may edit/delete your entry/discussion.
    • You will not know whether you are allowed to edit your entry before the entry has been posted.
    • You are not allowed to delete your entry after somebody has replied to it.
  • When you see the Attachment or Browse button under the editor, you are allowed to attach a file.

When starting a discussion, you may

  • allow threaded replies
  • demand that users must post before being able to see replies
  • allow liking

Group discussions

  • When you choose the setting 'group discussion', the discussion will be the start of a local, internal discussion in each group. If you don't choose this setting, however, the discussion will include everybody on the entire course.
  • You don't have to choose a starting and ending time for the discussion. This choice is much more relevant for when the teachers are setting up discussions that are meant to take place during a specific time period.

  • If you see the choices Attachment or Browse below the editor, you are allowed to attach a file.
  • If you are allowed to edit/delete your entry, you can click the vertical dots and see the edit/delete functions under the tool icon.
  • Deleted entries will keep their place in the entry list, and will be marked as having been deleted by [name/role].
