SUGGESTING MEMBERS FOR THE EXPERT ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE?

At some departments supervisors are involved in suggesting members for the committee. It is then common to start the work before the thesis is submitted. If you are involved in this process, it is important to know the requirements for the committee members.

Requirements for the composition of the assessment committee:

  • both genders are represented, also among the opponents;
  • the majority have no association with the University of Bergen;
  • one of the members, if possible, is from a foreign institution; and
  • all the members hold doctoral degrees or equivalent qualifications.

Specific reasons must be provided if there is a deviation from these criteria. The appointed supervisor may not be a member of the committee.

Please note that opponents residing outside of Europe are expected to participate digitally at the trial lecture and the public defence due to environmental and economic considerations.

The department will:

  • get consent from the prefered members to serve as committee members and inform about the rules of impartiality that they need to self-assess before they accept.
  • propose the composition of the assessment committee to the faculty, with one of its employees as chair of the committee.

The faculty will:

  • notify the candidate of the proposed committee with the opportunity to send comments.
  • approve and appoint the committee.
