RETTE

Supervisors must give the candidate guidance in matters related to processing personal data.

UiB is required by law to have an overview and control of all research projects and student projects that process personal data. Medical/Health research projects need approval from REK. Some projects have consulting duty with a data protection officer, and NSD can assist in assessing privacy. After assessment or approval, information from NSD and REK is transferred to RETTE.

A part of your supervisor duties is to "ensure that the research project is approved in accordance with ethical rules, and advise in questions concerning ethics in research". This duty includes the need to know your role in RETTE.

In RETTE language, supervisors are called "Project manager" and have a specific role:

  • The project manager is familiar with the research practices at UiB, and will make sure that projects that are processing personal information are registered in RETTE.
  • The project manager may delegate the registration itself to a student or research fellow, but is responsible that the information about the project in RETTE is correct and up to date.
  • The project manager must, twice a year, confirm that the information about a project in RETTE is correct and up to date.
  • The project manager must oversee that personal information is deleted or anonymized after the termination of a project.

The PhD candidate is responsible to register the project in RETTE, and supervisors are responsible to make sure that this is done.
