A PHD IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

The PhD candidates themselves are responsible for carrying out their PhD projects and actively contributing to relevant research networks.

The UiB is responsible for ensuring that the candidates have the best possible conditions for succeeding. Therefore: A successful PhD is a shared responsibility.

Each PhD candidate must be affiliated with and have a main supervisor from a department.  As a main supervisor you have the day-to-day responsibility for the candidate. This means together with the Head of Department ensure that the candidate is integrated into research groups and communities and to be updated about the candidates project and progress. The co-supervisor(-s) share the responsibility for the candidates academic progress with the main supervisor.

The department is responsible for infrastructure and routines for follow-up.

The PhD programme is the responsibility of the faculty level.

The PhD degree is at UiB level. Therefore, the University Board has the overall responsibility for PhD education at all faculties.
