ABOUT THE FACULTY - EARLY YEARS

If you are new at the faculty, or just would like to know,- here are some historical facts about the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1970 as a result of the separation of social science subjects from the Faculty of Humanities.

Several of the subjects within the social sciences were established before the Faculty of Social Sciences became a reality. A number of people with a strong academic weight participated in the design of both the subject and the upcoming faculty.

Fredrik Barth started at the University of Bergen in 1961, at the Department of Philosophy. Stein Rokkan came from the Christian Michelsen Institute to a professorship of sociology at UiB in 1966, as the Department of Sociology was established. At the Department of Sociology were also Ørjar Øyen and Knut Dahl Jacobsen, and they all played a central role in the establishment of the faculty.
